Excellent dark skies in Central Oregon – 5000 feet

This year’s Oregon Star Party (OSP) runs from July 30th to August 4th, with new moon occurring on August 4th.

During this time you might be able to see the tail end of the Delta Aquarids meteor shower which peaks on the morning of the 29th. Prepare to see up to 20 meteors per hour if you happen to set up camp early in Indian Springs. If you are lucky you might also catch the beginnings of the Perseid meteor shower which begins to appear around July 17th but does not peak until the 12th/13th of August.

If you see a meteor radiating out of the south it probably comes from the Delta Aquarid. If you’re out observing the shower and you see a meteor radiating out of the north chances are it’s a Perseid.

Relax in a recliner with a blanket at the ready (it can get cold at Indian Trail Spring)
